Confessions of a Prison Wife

prison wife interview

How did you two meet?

I was with his brother at the time. Weird, I know, but his brother wanted me to start writing him so I did. I am a firm believer in "you can’t help who you fall in love with", I just happened to fall in love with someone who is incarcerated! That is the way I see it, at least.

12 Ex-Cons Reveal The Most Terrifying Thing They Saw Inside Prison

April 4, 2022

ex cons

1. I saw someone take a hotpot fill it up with baby oil add a pound of sugar, add some magic shave, bring it to a boil then splash it in a person’s face…… It literally melted the guys face off. This happened around 1999 and I still have the occasional nightmare about it

7 Inmates And Former Inmates Reveal What Solitary Confinement Is Like

January 24, 2022

1. Absolute hell. I was in solitary for 3 days as a 15 year old, which is nothing in a world where adult prisoners can spend a month or more in there. No clothes, no books, a steel bed and the room was kept very very cold. I was allowed a bible for 1 hour a day. The rest of my time was spent staring at the wall.

Confessions of the Deputy Warden Of The World’s Most Humane Prison

halden prison deputy

How did a program like this come about, was it at first controversial or was it always accepted as a good idea?

Building the facility was a decision made by the parliament in Norway. The way is was built, was to reflect some of the central principles of the Norwegian correctional services; Humanity and Normality. Some said the first months that is was to “luxurious” – but that critique silenced after a while.

How many prisoners are in your prison?

Approx. 260. A big prison by Norwegian standard, very small by US standards…. We could argue for hours what is the “best” size, however my experience is that very large prisons is more about “logistics” than rehabilitation.

What It’s Like To Get In A Prison Fight

August 4, 2021

A prison fight is nothing like the UFC or boxing. It’s straight-up bedlam. Anything that can happen, will happen. Locks in a sock, shanks and mop wringers are all game. You can’t get a fair fight, but you can get a square one. You just have to know the rules. And the rules vary.

The universal rule is that fighting is part of prison life. You either fight or lose everything. Heart checks are mandatory. It’s called being “on the count” and if you aren’t present, you’ll get checked into the hole by your own boys.

“Whenever you are going to do any type of fighting in a penal institution what rules you go by are determined by where you are at,” said Kevin Smith, a 47-year-old penitentiary veteran from Fort Worth, Texas who has done 10 years in federal institutions, three stints in the Texas Department of Corrections (TDC) and multiple stays in county jail for a variety of charges including meth distribution and manufacture, gun possession, conspiracy to rob a bank and assault.

The TDC is one of the more notorious prison systems in the country. They got a saying when you walk into a Texas prison, “You gotta fight, fuck or bust a 60.” The first two are self-explanatory, the third means paying someone off for protection.

What Is Prison Food Like?

August 4, 2021

It depends on where you are designated. One thing is certain: regardless of where you, are the food is terrible. Think lowest bidder won contracts. Expired and waste.

You’ll be fed stuff that’s gross but filling, if you can stomach the taste of it.

A typical breakfast might consist of “biscuits and gravy” which is nothing like actual B&G, it’s more like shortbread squares covered in a tan gravy made from water and powdered gravy mix and some TVP (texturized vegetable protein AKA soy) to simulate sausage, but it has the texture of overcooked hamburger and the flavor of nothing.

Man is released from prison after serving 29 years for murder he didn’t commit

In the summer of 1992, Eric Riddick was 22 years old when he was convicted of first-degree murder in the November 1991 shooting death of his friend, William Catlett.

The conviction was largely based on the testimony of Shawn Stevenson, an eyewitness who told police four different accounts of what he saw but eventually named Riddick as the shooter in his last statement, according to previous appeals cited by The Associated Press. The eyewitness also said Riddick was on a balcony shooting down at Catlett, however, forensic evidence showed the shots were fired in an upward direction, according to an appeal filed by Riddick.

Stevenson later recanted his testimony in a 1999 affidavit, claiming he was coerced by Philadelphia police to name Riddick

How Bad Is Prison Food?

March 17, 2021

how bad is prison food

First, let’s take commissary food out of the equation. In Missouri they give you a 2000 calory a day diet. But that’s only if you eat everything on your plate. Chances are you will not. So unless you are able to spend money at the prison commissary on food you will lose weight.

I was fortunate to have loved ones send me money. I have never forgotten that.

Now the types of food. Some wasn’t bad but most was bad. Pizzas were like school pizzas. Square with just cheese on them oatmeal and dry cereal wasn’t bad but how can you mess that up?

lady guitar prison

(photo: Shane Speal)

“Lady”, an electric guitar built illegally by an inmate in a Pennsylvania State prison

This guitar came to life inside the 126-year-old jail that is so massive, it’s known locally as “The Wall.” Junior Ben had a broken guitar neck to start with. The heavy body was hand-carved from Pennsylvanian walnut and oak with white-painted binding. The hand-stamped brass truss rod cover has the word, “LADY,” a tribute to B.B. King’s “Lucille.”

All the wiring was smuggled in from the prison shops or pulled out of headphone jacks. All the knobs are spaced very closely together, a necessary step in order to keep wiring to a minimum.

halden prison norway

This is a Nordic prison, which focuses on rehabilitation rather than punishment

The 250 inmates here are locked in their cells for 12 hours a day. But those cells are private rooms, with wood furniture, a shower, a fridge and a flat-screen TV.

Norway spends $90,000 a year to house each prisoner — three times what is spent on inmates in the United States.

The recidivism rate is less than 30 percent, half of what it is in the U.S. And there are more than 2.2 million Americans in prison; Norway’s prison population is one-tenth that, on a per capita basis.
