Why Does Correlation Not Imply Causation?

Correlation means that two things seem to have a connection or a pattern. All that has to exist for a correlation is to note that if we track how two or more things change over time, it seems like they change in a related way. So any graph that shows A and B both increasing shows a correlation between A and B, especially if at times when A decreases B also decreases.
Causation means we can prove if one thing happens, it makes the other thing happen. We don’t need a graph or data analysis for causation, sometimes we can reason it out.

Picture of the Day

Beth Thomas’ appearance on 1992 documentary Child of Rage featured shocking footage of her telling her psychiatrist she wanted to kill her parents and brother in the dead of night. She suffered from a rare psychological condition, RDA, that stemmed from extreme childhood neglect and sexual abuse – but she beat the odds to overcome her horrific early life to help others like her.
In the footage, Beth – then aged 6 – explains that parents Tim and Julie lock her in her room at night to stop her from stabbing them to death.
She also admits to sexually abusing her younger brother, Jonathan, torturing the family dog and killing a nest of baby birds.
You’re Not Ugly. You Just Look Like You

I photograph a lot of people. Almost everyone believes they are ugly. Your grandmother. Your child. Your best friend. Most models. Most actors. Maybe even you.
“Oh, don’t take my photo, I’ll break your camera!” laughs the 80-year-old grandfather. When he dies a few months later, his grandkids will treasure this reminder of his “ugly mug.”
“Please delete this,” says a dear old friend. She looks beautiful. She looks like herself. She’s been captured in a moment in which she is utterly comfortable in her skin. And she hates it.

Confessions of a Gay Man Who Married A Straight Woman

Why?
She was my best friend and I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her, regardless of whether I was sexually attracted to her. She’s the best human being I know.
We wanted to live together, we wanted to have kids together, we wanted to wake up next to each other every morning, and we wanted to grow old together. We wanted an exclusive relationship with each other even if sexual attraction was not a driving force in that relationship. I’m not saying that marriage is necessarily the right solution for anyone. For us, it’s just what made the most sense.

Confession of the Day

My wife came out. She saw it fitting with it being June and all. Her dad recently passed. He was infamously homophobic, so much so he disowned my wife’s brother for being gay.
We have been together for 24 years. We started dating at 20 and married at 25. We’re now 44 an 43. We had a family. 3 children from 16 to 10. They’re lives are about to be torn apart thanks to a divorce.
