The Daily Man-Up: If You Don’t Do It Now, You Never Will

February 2, 2021

procrastination advice

I always plan a ton before carrying out the actual tasks as a way to avoid doing the actual things so that I can have a perfect start for another task that I will never take action for or just give up half way through.

I always convince myself that I will do it when the minute hand hits 0, 15, 30 because it just doesn’t feel right starting anything when the time is as odd as something like 11:47. Guess what. I never do it even when it’s a perfect 12:00.

As a self-loathing, chronic procrastinator I’ve often ridden the self improvement train. You know, the “I just watched 5 motivational videos of The Rock saying you can do anything you set your mind to, and today I’m going to change my entire life, omg yes” train. Of course, that effort never quite ends the way we’d envision it; with the new lifestyle lasting all of a week before we’re back to old habits.

The Daily Man-Up: Mental Strength Training

I used to be a mental wimp…

No, seriously. About 10 years ago, I was a total mental weakling. I couldn’t go for long without AC, my work ethic was equivalent to that of a 60’s stoner, and the thought of a cold shower just about made me pass out.

Ok, I might be exaggerating a little bit, but I can PROMISE you I wasn’t mentally tough.

Today, I train with heavy weights 4x a week, have taken cold showers (almost) every day for more than half a decade, worked countless 16 hour days to build my 7-figure business, and have generally become way tougher mentally and physically.

If I can do it, anyone can.

Here’s how I boosted my mental strength and how you can to.

I created a simple blueprint for me to follow whenever I want something. It is the “If, then” mindset

So a great example of this is with a simple sentence:

  • I want to start working out, but I don’t have the time.
  • I want to make art but I am too exhausted.
  • I want a camera but I have no money

Here is how to change that with the “if, then” rule:

I think that learning how to fight and knowing how to fight gives you real confidence and security. Because when you know how to fight, all of a sudden you don’t have anything to prove anymore. If we actually knew how to fight, we wouldn’t how to prove that all the time. And that’s why I’m constantly trying to get people to get into jiu-jitsu. Get your kids and get your 13 year old boy, your 10 year old boy, get him into jiu-jitsu. Your girl, too. I mean, your girl, too, because your girl is going to use it for defense.

The best way to ensure your future is close or exactly the way you want it to be, it will require you to set goals and get clear about what exactly you want to experience. You need to create a blueprint for your life which is like a life map.

This exercise greatly changed my life. Creating my life blueprint has helped me become less anxious about my future because I knew what I wanted in each area of my life and what I needed to do to get those results.

When we don’t have life goals, we feel lost. I’ve found that by setting goals for each area of my life, I feel like I have something important to work towards and I feel great with the more progress I make.

Any progress is good progress.

Rome wasn’t built in a day. You can’t edit a blank page etc. Don’t expect to go from a lazy, unstructured layabout to Mr efficient marathon running supersoldier overnight, over a week, over a month, hell even over a year – this is setting (often deliberately) unrealistic expectations for yourself and setting yourself up for disappointment.

Deeply ingrained negative thought loops and harmful habits take time to overcome and redirect into positive ones. Our brains are adaptable and It will happen eventually, but it’s done incrementally, and it takes time, consistency and resolve.

porn free

No porn.

The programming: Indulge your hedonistic desires to your heart’s content. It’s normal, healthy and free.

Except… It’s not normal. The monkey brain wasn’t made for the world of on-demand, high-def, infinite-variety porn that can be delivered straight into the eye sockets of anybody with a working internet connection.

Porn, like compulsive gambling and spree shopping, is an extreme example of the brain’s reward system being highjacked by an exaggerated version of a naturally healthy stimulus. Just as the gambler needs to keep pulling that lever to get their dopamine fix, so do porn addicts learn to blunt themselves into docile submissiveness with their habit.

stop multitasking

Stop multitasking.

The programming: Rapidly flick from one screen to the next. Notifications popping up to tell you about everything, all the time. Answer emails while walking to the coffee shop. Check your social media during the lecture. It all feels super-productive, but multi-tasking crushes productivity, increases frustrating, and saps your energies. A day spent multitasking is a day wasted. A life spent multitasking is fractious and ineffectual.
