The Importance Of Paying Yourself First

One of the oldest rules of personal finance is the simple admonition to pay yourself first. All the money books tell you to do it. All the personal finance blogs say it, too. Even your parents have given you the same advice.

But it’s hard. That money could be used someplace else. You could pay the phone bill, could pay down debt, could buy a new DVD player. You’ve tried once or twice in the past, but it’s so easy to forget. You don’t keep a budget, so when payday rolls around, the money just finds its way elsewhere.

And besides: What does “pay yourself first” even mean?

1. I want my left foot gone. There’s a distinct line where I feel the stump should end. My foot feels like it’s supposed to be there, but at the same time it’s not. My foot, ankle or the lower half of my shin will tingle or hurt sometimes. Every day, I wake up and think: “Damn it, my foot is still attached to my body”.

$215k law school debt, $40k graduate school debt, $25k credit cards, $11k car loan, and a personal loan.

After 5 years of deep denial- I think I’ve finally accepted how badly we fucked up. I feel like I’ve gone through the stages of grief multiple times this year.

1. The absolute best benefit is that I notice, within myself, when negative thoughts or emotions are arising.

I can see them before they get out of control, observe them and their causes, and adjust. I can think critically and evaluate my options before acting hastily.

Likewise, when somebody says something that upsets me, I don’t just react. I stop to observe it’s effects on me, think about why it affects me like that, and then consider the intention of the speaker. This helps me avoid unnecessary conflict due to misunderstanding.

The Hare & the Tortoise

One day a hare was making fun of a tortoise for being slow, while a the same time he bragged about his own speed.

“I’ll race you,” the tortoise said quietly.

“You’ll WHAT?!” the hare laughed.

“I said, I’ll race you,” the tortoise repeated.

“HA! You race me? That’s a laugh!” the hare guffawed. “why, I’d be at the finish line before you even got started!”

“And I bet I’ll win,” the tortoise calmly continued.

“It’s a bet!” cried the hare, and the two shook hands on the wager.
