Vintage mugshots from Australia, 1920s; William Stanley Moore: Opium dealer./ Operates with large quantities of faked opium and cocaine./ A wharf labourer; associates with water front thieves and drug traders

This picture is one of a series of around 2500 “special photographs” taken by New South Wales Police Department photographers between 1910 and 1930. These “special photographs” were mostly taken in the cells at the Central Police Station, Sydney and are, as curator Peter Doyle explains, of “men and women recently plucked from the street, often still animated by the dramas surrounding their apprehension”. Doyle suggests that, compared with the subjects of prison mug shots, “the subjects of the Special Photographs seem to have been allowed – perhaps invited – to position and compose themselves for the camera as they liked. Their photographic identity thus seems constructed out of a potent alchemy of inborn disposition, personal history, learned habits and idiosyncrasies, chosen personal style (haircut, clothing, accessories) and physical characteristics.”

chinese hitmen

In 2013, a Chinese businessman hired a hitman to "take out" his competitor for $282,000. But the hitman hired another man to do the job, offering $141,000. That man hired another hitman, who hired another hitman, who hired another hitman. The final hitman was offered only $14,100, and he contacted the target and asked him to fake his death.

The fifth hitman helped Wei stage his death. Wei was bound and gagged in photos, and Ling Xiansi sent the photos to his employer. The news traveled up the chain of subcontractors up to the original client, businessman Tan Youhui.

However, after the photos of Wei were taken, the police were notified.

Tan Youhui, the real estate developer, was sentenced to five years in prison, while the five hitmen were sentenced between two to four years of prison time.

Amish mugshots

Eight Amish men were booked into the Graves County, Kentucky jail for contempt of court after they refused to pay fines releated to not affixing orange safety triangles to their horse and buggies

The men argued that the reflective triangles were too modern, and went against their Mennonite beliefs. The judge disagreed, however, and they received jail sentences ranging from three to ten days.

The charge was relatively minor, but the mugshots taken at the time of their arrest have since spread like wildfire on the web.In a nod to their religion, which frowns upon bright colors, the men were provided blue prison jump suits instead of the orange coveralls inmates are typically issued.

butkus-sylvester-stallone

Sylvester Stallone had to sell his dog, Butkus, to get food. He initially sold Butkus for $40, but bought him back for $15,000

When I was 26, totally broke, going nowhere VERY fast, owned two pair of pants that barely fit, shoes that had holes in them and dreams of being successful were as far away as the sun… But I had my dog, BUTKUS, my best friend, my confidant, Who always laughed at my jokes, and put up with my moods, and was the one living thing that loved me for who I was!

Since I never went out, I relied on his companionship , And actually it was his idea to write Rocky, but don’t tell anyone…. Years later when things got even worse I had to sell him for $40 in front of a 7-Eleven store, because I couldn’t afford food, then like A modern day miracle, the screenplay for Rocky sold, and I could buy and buy him back, but the new owner knew I was desperate, and charged me $15,000… He was worth every penny!

chocktaw memorial

In a small town in County Cork, Ireland, a monument stands in appreciation to the Choctaw Indian Tribe. Although impoverished, shortly after being forced to walk the Trail of Tears, the tribe gathered $170 to send to Ireland for famine relief in 1847.

On March 23, 1847, the Indians of the Choctaw nation took up a collection. Moved by news of starvation in Ireland, a group of Choctaws gathered in Scullyville, Okla., to raise a relief fund. Despite their meager resources, they collected $170 ($5,362.84 in todays money) and forwarded it to a famine relief organization. For context, in 1870 men in Ireland were making about $7 per week (women $40 per year)

bruce mccandless spacewalk

In 1984, Bruce McCandless hovered 320 ft away, untethered from the Challenger and made it back safely using a nitrogen jetpack called Manned Maneuver Unit

Testing the MMU for the first time in space required a lot of focus and bravery, but McCandless and Stewart had faith in the hardware. Weighing 300 lbs. /136 kg, the MMU was powered by 24 small compressed nitrogen thrusters with two motion-controlled handles on either armrest for simple maneuvering. It was developed by engineer Charles Whitsett, and McCandless tested the MMU underwater and inside the Skylab space station prior to his famous spacewalk.

hubble xtreme deep field

Over 5,500 galaxies depicted in Hubble’s eXtreme Deep Field, including a galaxy formed only 450 million years after the Big Bang

Magnificent spiral galaxies similar in shape to our Milky Way and the neighboring Andromeda galaxy appear in this image, as do the large, fuzzy red galaxies where the formation of new stars has ceased. These red galaxies are the remnants of dramatic collisions between galaxies and are in their declining years. Peppered across the field are tiny, faint, more distant galaxies that were like the seedlings from which today’s magnificent galaxies grew. The history of galaxies — from soon after the first galaxies were born to the great galaxies of today, like our Milky Way — is laid out in this one remarkable image.
