Jason Vukovich, known as the “Alaskan Avenger,” who was convicted of using the state’s sex offender registry to track down offenders, break into their homes, and beat them with a hammer

As a child, Jason Vukovich was sexually and physically abused by his stepfather. As an adult, he decided to get revenge — by tracking down sex offenders and attacking them with a hammer. Because of this, Vukovich himself was charged with assault in 2016, but many hailed him as a hero. Though he remains in prison today, some are still campaigning for his release.

The King of Thule, Piet van der Ouderaa, 1896

The King of Thule, Piet van der Ouderaa, 1896

There was a king in Thule,
Was faithful till the grave,
To whom his mistress, dying,
A golden goblet gave.
Nought was to him more precious;
He drained it at every bout;
His eyes with tears ran over,
As oft as he drank thereout.
When came his time of dying,
The towns in his land he told,
Nought else to his heir denying
Except the goblet of gold.
He sat at the royal banquet
With his knights of high degree,
In the lofty hall of his father
In the castle by the sea.
There stood the old carouser,
And drank the last life-glow;
And hurled the hallowed goblet
Into the tide below.
He saw it plunging and filling,
And sinking deep in the sea:
Then fell his eyelids for ever,
And never more drank he!

Kids remote learning during a polio outbreak in the 1940s. Teachers read lessons over the radio.

In 1937, a severe polio epidemic hit the U.S. At the time, this contagious virus had no cure, and it crippled or paralyzed some of those it infected. Across the country, playgrounds and pools closed, and children were banned from movie theaters and other public spaces. Chicago had a record 109 cases in August, prompting the Board of Health to postpone the start of school for three weeks.

This delay sparked the first large-scale “radio school” experiment through a highly innovative – though largely untested – program. Some 315,000 children in grades 3 through 8 continued their education at home, receiving lessons on the radio.

unabomber mugshot

The Unabomber was a “criminal mastermind” who went to extraordinary lengths to erase any trace of physical evidence within his explosives. He ripped the skins off batteries to make them untraceable. He also avoided commercial glue and instead made his own epoxy by melting down deer hooves

After the Unabomber demanded in 1995 that his manifesto, Industrial Society and Its Future, be published in a major newspaper as a condition for ceasing his mail-bomb campaign, The New York Times and The Washington Post published the manifesto, hoping somebody would recognize the writing style of the author.

German City Installs Sleep Pods for People Experiencing Homelessness

The city of Ulm launched a creative program to help the homeless find emergency shelter at night and 6 entrepreneurs and technical experts rose to the challenge. They created a series of sleeping capsules, or ‘nests,’ that are perfect for those who are very reluctant to go to traditional shelters. The capsules allow the homeless to get some sleep, as well as to stay warm in winter when it’s incredibly dangerous to be outside. The pods can fit up to two people and can also be locked, ensuring full safety.

Billie Holiday performing “Strange Fruit” at Café Society, the first integrated nightclub in New York 1939

The song protests the lynching of Black Americans, with lyrics that compare the victims to the fruit of trees. Her 1939 rendition of this song was included in the US National Recording Registry in 2003.

She was under exclusive contract to Columbia Records at the time, and she approached them with the song…and they refused to record or publish it. Her personal producer also refused to have anything to do with recording it. They didn’t want Southern white people to boycott their label.

mouse utopia

There was a man-made mouse utopia called Universe 25. It started with 4 males and 4 females. The colony peaked at 2200 and from there declined to extinction. Once a tipping point was reached, the mice lost instinctual behaviors. Scientists extrapolate this model to humans on earth.

Lone females retreated to isolated nesting boxes on penthouse levels. Other males, a group Calhoun termed “the beautiful ones,” never sought sex and never fought—they just ate, slept, and groomed, wrapped in narcissistic introspection. Elsewhere, cannibalism, pansexualism, and violence became endemic. Mouse society had collapsed.

fiona simpson hail

A 23-year-old mother was lauded as a ‘hero’ and ‘wonder woman’ for using her body to shield her infant daughter from a hail storm

It all happened when Fiona Simpson was driving back from a coffeeshop with her daughter and grandmother. “I wasn’t driving very fast because I couldn’t see very well… I couldn’t see in front of me, I couldn’t even see the line on the road,” Simpson told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). Seeing the storm aggravating, she pulled over her vehicle to wait until it becomes a little favourable to drive again. However, it only escalated and it started to hail — blowing out a back-seat window of her car and putting her infant in danger, she informed The Project.
