georgia guidestones

A monument in Georgia with instructions in 8 languages on how to re-build a post-apocalyptic society

They’re called the Georgia Guidestones and they actually look like the Ten Commandments. The five 16-feet-tall granite walls overlook a barren knoll in northeastern Georgia, supporting a 25,000-pound capstone. But what’s even more astonishing than their massiveness (four of the five slabs weigh more than 20 tons each!) is what is inscribed on the rock: carved on the polished granite are directions in eight different languages instructing the survivors of a supposed apocalypse on how to properly rebuild society.

nyc taxi medallion

NYC Taxi Medallion

A taxi medallion, also known as a CPNC (Certificate of Public Necessity and Convenience), is a transferable permit in the United States allowing a taxi driver to operate. A number of major cities in the US use these in their taxi licensing systems, including New York, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, and San Francisco. Medallions may be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. The New York medallions are the most valuable, once peaking at over one million dollars. With the introduction of peer-to-peer ridesharing services, the taxi industry has faced competition, and the price of medallions has dropped substantially (~$120,000).

The World Heritage site of Chauvet Cave in southern France is famous for having the world’s oldest cave paintings.

When the cave was discovered in 1994, many scholars initially assumed that they must have been made around the same time as those at Lascaux, around 21,000 years ago.

poo diver

Meet Brendan Walsh, Professional Poo Diver

Brendan Walsh runs a commercial diving business in Melbourne and spends his days in all sorts of no-air environments, with a small part being sewage.

Sewage diving in Australia is essential because we use bacteria instead of chemicals to break down the solids.

Big stirring machines run 24 hours a day and moving parts constantly break, which is when Mr Walsh’s business is called in to repair them.

debeers 2 months salary

The “tradition” of spending several months salary on an engagement ring was a marketing campaign created by De Beers in the 1930’s. Before WWII, only 10% of engagement rings contained diamonds. By the end of the 20th Century, 80% did.

The idea was embedded in popular culture in the West by an advertising drive from the De Beers diamond cartel that started in the lean years of the 1930s. The Depression was a disaster for De Beers, which controlled 60% of rough diamond output. De Beers embarked on what it now describes as a “substantial” campaign, linking diamonds with engagement.

Prior to the 1930s, presenting a woman with a diamond engagement ring was not the norm. Even on the eve of World War Two, a mere 10% of engagement rings contained diamonds. By the end of the 20th Century, 80% did.

longyearbyen buried

(photo: Zairon, Wikipedia)

It’s forbidden to be buried in Longyearbyen, Norway. The town’s only cemetery closed over 70 years ago because it’s so cold that bodies previously buried there have never decomposed, and some still carry traces of an influenza virus that caused an epidemic in 1917.

Dying has been banned on the island since 1950, when it was discovered that bodies in the local cemetery were not decomposing because of the chilly temperatures.
