hiroo onoda

A Japanese soldier in WWII, Hiroo Onoda, held out for 29 years in the jungle of the Philippines, and refused to quit fighting until he was convinced the war was over… in 1974

On December 26th, 1944, Onoda was sent to Lubang Island in the Philippines.  His orders from his commanding officers, Major Yoshimi Taniguchi, were simple:

You are absolutely forbidden to die by your own hand. It may take three years, it may take five, but whatever happens, we’ll come back for you. Until then, so long as you have one soldier, you are to continue to lead him. You may have to live on coconuts. If that’s the case, live on coconuts! Under no circumstances are you [to] give up your life voluntarily.

Lieutenant Commander Woody Lee stands on Red Square with the “nuclear football” attached to his wrist with a leather strap to prevent it from being seized or lost during US President Ronald Reagan’s visit to Moscow with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev in May 1988

There are four things in the Football. The Black Book containing the retaliatory options, a book listing classified site locations, a manila folder with eight or ten pages stapled together giving a description of procedures for the Emergency Broadcast System, and a three-by-five-inch [7.5 × 13 cm] card with authentication codes. The Black Book was about 9 by 12 inches [23 × 30 cm] and had 75 loose-leaf pages printed in black and red. The book with classified site locations was about the same size as the Black Book, and was black. It contained information on sites around the country where the president could be taken in an emergency.

bass reeves

Bass Reeves (1838—1910) was the first Black U.S. Marshall, west of the Mississippi River. He arrested nearly 3,000 outlaws in his career.

Before becoming a legendary lawman of the Wild West, Reeves was an enslaved man born in Arkansas. When the Civil War broke out, he was forced to fight for the Confederacy, but escaped to Indian Territory (modern day Oklahoma). Reeves quickly adapted to his new environment, learning the customs and languages of the Seminole and Creek people.

After the war, Reeves returned to Arkansas as a free man. He settled down, got married and had 11 children. However, his quiet family life came to an end when he was recruited to reign in the growing number of outlaws.

diarrhea civil war

Diarrhea was the leading cause of death in the American Civil War. Soldiers had a code of honor to not shoot at anyone who was pooping.

Of the nearly 750,000 soldiers that died, 95,000 died from diarrhea or dysentery.

For every soldier that died on the battlefield, two died from disease.

Poor hygiene, crowded conditions, lack of medical treatment, and latrines built near streams, created the perfect breeding ground for diseases to proliferate and spread amongst the soldiers.

dont marry marriage advice from 1891

Marriage advice from 1891.⁣⁣ These pages were taken from a dime novel that was sold in NYC by the J.S. Ogilvie Publishing Company. It was recently digitized by Villanova University.⁣⁣

Here are some excerpts:

—Don’t marry your cousin. It may be very tempting; relatives are often warmly attached to each other from long and intimate acquaintance. Remember that constantly thrown in each other’s society will often create such attachments. With many persons, marriage of blood relations will more or less lead to deafness, blindness, or deformity. It may skip one generation and find another. It may result in disease and weakness. It may be all right, but seven to eight it is risky and uncertain, and you can’t afford to be uncertain in such matters.⁣

The group took a break on Monday, during which they were captured sleeping together in a patch of forest on the outskirts of southwest China’s Kunming.

In France, Peyo, a 15-year-old stallion, often comes to comfort and soothe terminally ill patients at the Techer Hospital in Calais. The horse always chooses which patient he wants to see, kicking his hoof outside the door

Peyo was originally trained to take part in equestrian shows, but his handler Hassen Bouchakour began to realize his horse had a different calling. After shows, Peyo would pick people out in a crowd and stay close to them. Bouchakour later realized that he was instinctively choosing people that were sick—either physically or mentally. The trainer gave up his career as a showman and decided to embrace Peyo’s special gift in order to help those who need it. Today, Bouchakour works with a therapeutic organization called Les Sabots du Coeur (the clogs of the heart), which is conducting a study of Peyo’s extraordinary abilities.
