Family Rescued From Car Dangling Off Freeway Bridge

A mother and her two children were in their car when it was clipped from behind by a big-rig gravel truck and left dangling over the side of an overpass on the 101 Freeway south of Buellton, Calif.

The truck that hit the BMW went over the side and plunged into a creek bed, killing the driver.

The rescue effort was aided by a group of Navy Seabees from Port Hueneme who were stuck in southbound traffic near the accident.

They were able to use a forklift they were transporting to help prevent the BMW from sliding off the bridge.

4 Barreled .22cal Nazi Belt Buckle Gun

The Marquis Belt Buckle pistol, also known informally as the Power Pelvis Gun, was conceived by Louis Marquis while interned in a POW camp during World War I. Frustrated by long chow and loo lines, Marquis was consumed by a desire to exert his authority over other POW’s without drawing the attention of guards – hence the idea for a concealed weapon not requiring the use of hands or traditional holsters. Named the Koppelschlosspistole, the design was patented before the outbreak of World War II. The patent was issued in late 1934 for a “trommelrevolver” to be mounted on a belt. Both .22 (four barrel) and .32 (two barrel) versions were produced in very limited numbers.

This is what the apple car might look like, based on the real-life patents Apple has filed.

The Apple Car has mostly been a concept limited to speculation and rumors, with minimal information released regarding product design and launch dates and even no confirmation that they are developing their own electric vehicle. In turn, fans have resorted to looking at patents Apple recently filed to inform their own conclusions.

In absence of any further details, a team at Vanarama has taken matters into their own hands and designed a concept car “using genuine patents filed by Apple Inc.” Filling in the blanks, Vanarama has recreated the possible aesthetic of what Apple’s futuristic car might look like through an interactive 3D model.

Flag Raising On Iwo Jima, 1945

It is but a speck of an island 760 miles south of Tokyo, a volcanic pile that blocked the Allies’ march toward Japan. The Americans needed Iwo Jima as an air base, but the Japanese had dug in. U.S. troops landed on February 19, 1945, beginning a month of fighting that claimed the lives of 6,800 Americans and 21,000 Japanese.

On the fifth day of battle, the Marines captured Mount Suribachi. An American flag was quickly raised, but a commander called for a bigger one, in part to inspire his men and demoralize his opponents. Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal lugged his bulky Speed Graphic camera to the top, and as five Marines and a Navy corpsman prepared to hoist the Stars and Stripes, Rosenthal stepped back to get a better frame—and almost missed the shot.

The face of boxer Billy Collins Jr. after his career was cut short by injuries from his opponents tampered gloves. His life took a downward spiral and he died in a car crash at the age of 22

Undefeated Billy Collins Jr. (14-0, 11 KO) was a junior middleweight (154 lb.) prospect on his way up. Luis Resto (20-8-2, 8 KO) was a light-punching journeyman.

Resto beat Collins’ eyes shut and his skin purple and blue. Collins suffered a torn iris and his vision was forever blurred. Collins could no longer fight. Collins’ father and trainer Collins Sr. went up to shake Resto’s hand out of sportsmanship, only to be overcome with rage at how thin Resto’s glove was. He demanded the gloves be impounded. Resto’s padding had been removed, and Resto himself admitted years later that his handwraps had been soaked in plaster of Paris, a substance that hardens into plaster casts.

ww1 bagpiper

Bagpipers were usually the first ones out of the trenches when it was time to fight; playing as they lead the soldiers into each battle in WW1

2500 bagpipe players were in the trenches with their men.

The pipers played the clarion call to arms to the men of the British Expeditionary Forces and thus were usually the first ones “over the top.”

They stood in full view of the German lines playing their instrument, and marched through “no-man’s land” without any ammunition but their sound.

The bagpipe players carried no cutting devices when they encountered barbed wire. Enemy fire mowed them down just as effectively as they killed advancing troops.

600 pipers were wounded, 500 bagpipe players died while rallying the troops into battle.
