Think of Dungeons and Dragons like one of those Choose Your Own Adventure books, except the book is blank and the Dungeon Master fills it out himself and is reading it to you. Then you (and your characters) try to navigate through the book without getting yourself killed.
If it seems like today’s kids have gotten “softer” compared to the kids decades ago, perhaps it’s because playgrounds have gotten softer as well. Thanks to state laws and personal injury lawyers, the landscape of the typical playground has changed a lot over the years, making it a safer and more “educationally interactive” environment. On the other hand, maybe those rough-and-tumble recreation areas of yesteryear served as an early life lesson that the world was a harsh and unforgiving place.
Have you ever wondered what makes mentally strong people so charismatic and confident? What makes them stand up and shout when everybody else sits down and looks away? Is it something special, or simply madness?
A lot of people will tell you that it is God-given – it’s in the blood. A rare combination of genetics and upbringing that evolves into something extraordinary, the likes of which ordinary people can only stand and marvel at.
This, however, is a lie. Actually, it’s worse than that. It’s a lazy lie.

When people use us, then toss us to the side, that desire to win them over isn’t because we really want to be with them. It isn’t even really a desire for them. It’s a desire to prove our worth. When someone rejects you after using you, your ego and sense of pride is damaged, because they were able to play your emotions for them to their advantage, and get what they wanted, or what they think they wanted.
