The Bull by Pablo Picasso

Pablo Picasso’s The Bull is a series of eleven lithographs created in 1945. It depicts the bull at various stages of abstraction, starting with a fairly realistic depiction and ending with nothing but a few lines.

“Picasso reduces the bull to a simple outline that is so carefully considered through the progressive development of each image, that it captures the absolute essence of the creature in as concise an image as possible.”

The Ascension of Christ, painting by Salvador Dali, 1958

Dali said that his inspiration for The Ascension of Christ came from a “cosmic dream’ that he had in 1950, some eight years before the painting was completed. In the dream, which was in vivid color, he saw the nucleus of an atom, which we see in the background of the painting; Dali later realized that this nucleus was the true representation of the unifying spirit of Christ.

The feet of Christ points out at the viewer, drawing the eye inwards along his body to the center of the atom behind him. The atom has the same interior structure as the head of a sunflower. As with most of Dali’s other paintings of Christ, his face is not visible. Above the Christ is Gala, her eyes wet with tears.

‘Saturn Devouring His Son’ by Francisco Goya

This painting was 1 of 14 oil pieces (known as his Black Paintings) that Goya painted directly onto the walls of his farmhouse outside Madrid between 1819 and 1823.

He was in his 70s at the time and had survived a few serious illnesses (one of which left him deaf in one ear) while grappling with his own mortality. Goya also suffered from depression and trauma from the horrors of war that he had witnessed at the hands of Napoleon and the Spanish monarchy.

Ivan The Terrible And His Son, By Ilya Repin, 1885

Their relationship further deteriorated when on 15 November, the Tsar, after seeing his pregnant daughter-in-law wearing unconventionally light clothing, physically assaulted her. Hearing her screams, the Tsarevich rushed to his wife’s defense, angrily shouting, “You sent my first wife to a convent for no reason, you did the same with my second, and now you strike the third, causing the death of the son she holds in her womb.” Yelena subsequently suffered a miscarriage.
