William James Sidis

William James Sidis often lays claim to the title of the smartest man ever. Sidis was estimated to have an IQ in the 250–300 range.

Born on April 1, 1898, in New York City, William James Sidis was the son of Boris Sidis, a psychologist, and Sarah Mandelbaum Sidis, a physician. Both parents were Jewish Ukrainian immigrants, and they recognized their son’s prodigious talents early on.

By the age of 2, Sidis was reading The New York Times. At 6, he had already taught himself Latin, Greek, Russian, French, German, and Hebrew. And by the age of 8, he had even written a comprehensive anatomy textbook.

Poll of the Day

October 18, 2023

My girlfriend (F40) of 8 months revealed to me last night, rather casually, that she used to be a “serial cheater” for years; and cheated on every partner she ever had until a couple of years ago.

She said at the time she was remorseless, but eventually came to a point she decided it wasn’t conducive to a healthy relationship or her self esteem and decided to stop.

I (M38) have always struggled with trust issues my whole life for a variety of reasons I won’t go into. She seemed to brush this off as little more than an anecdote, but I gotta tell y’all, I’m shook.

I’d like to believe she’s changed and learned from this to become someone who would never do this again. But if I’m being honest, I definitely have less faith in her that I did 24hrs ago. What should I do?

The Art of Listening: Understanding the Need to Vent

October 18, 2023

We’ve all been there. A friend is telling you about a problem and you jump in with what you think is an obvious solution. But instead of being grateful, they get annoyed. “I just need to vent!” they protest.

When someone is upset, our first instinct is often to help “fix” the situation and make them feel better. But sometimes people don’t want advice or solutions. They just need to express their frustrations out loud to a sympathetic listener.

Confessions of a Man Who Won a $325 Million Powerball Jackpot

October 17, 2023

How did you first react?

I found out at 3 in the morning. I was putting away some laundry and tidying my room before crashing. The ticket was on my dresser so I gave it a quick check assuming it would be a bust so I could throw it in the waste paper basket.

When the numbers matched I sort of swooned and got dizzy. I kept double checking and stayed up to go to the lottery office when it opened. Some of the longest hours of my life. I was very red and warm, I kept fanning myself for a few days.
