roselle the dog

A guide dog named Roselle led a group of people including her blind owner down 78 flights of stairs before the North Tower collapsed on 9/11. She only stopped to give kisses to a woman who was having a panic attack.

Roselle the guide dog did her job calmly through the ear-splitting noise and crashing debris that engulfed the 78th floor of the North Tower. Her owner, Michael Hingson, blind since birth, smelled jet fuel. Yet he trusted that his dog would not lead him into danger.

Comment of the Day

July 8, 2020

Some people did not recognize me at first when I came back from Vietnam. (I turned 19 a week before my unit was sent to retake Hue during Tet 1968). When the fighting was over, all of us were old. Hundreds of years old, it seemed. My unit took 50% casualties. Our youth had been ripped from us. We were all photo number two. Friends from high school did not recognize me at first. Some thought I was my father (he survived his patrol being air dropped onto a Chinese infantry unit, one of only three men who survived the four day running fight) at first. I looked at pictures of my father before and after Korea, and of my uncle who liberated Buchenwald in WWII before and after the war. They were both like the photos above. Before and after.

War changes you, war ages you. It steals away something which makes you human. It hollows you out. Small wonder so many veterans commit suicide. It is not all John Wayne on “Sands of Iwo Jima”. War is dirty, loud, smelly and extremely frightening. You do things and see things you never saw in a movie, no matter how supposedly realistic it is. I never imagined having to beat another human’s head to past with a rock. The sight, the smell, the rage I felt.

The flower power hippies were right about one thing. War is not good for children or flowers. But blood does, literally, make the grass grow.

Radium Girls

‘Radium Girls’ who worked in a factory where they worked with luminescent radium. Not knowing it was dangerous, they often painted it on their lips and teeth for fun. They began to develop radium necrosis, causing their jaws to rot and develop disfiguring tumors, and eventually died

The Radium Girls were so contaminated that if you stood over their graves today with a Geiger counter, the radiation levels would still cause the needles to jump more than 80 years later. They were small-town girls from New Jersey who had been hired by a local factory to paint the clock faces of luminous watches, the latest new army gadget used by American soldiers. The women were told that the glow-in-the-dark radioactive paint was harmless, and so they painted 250 dials a day, licking their brushes every few strokes with their lips and tongue to give them a fine point.

minimum days

If you want to make working out a habit, have minimum days.

If you’re like me, you go through phases where you want to get back into shape and try really hard at it, only to lose motivation after a few weeks or months. The only time it stuck was when I planned out what would be my “minimum day”. A minimum day is just the bare minimum of what you have to do to stay on track, but is much faster and isn’t too daunting.
