children's playground 1912

Children’s playground in 1912

If it seems like today’s kids have gotten “softer” compared to the kids decades ago, perhaps it’s because playgrounds have gotten softer as well. Thanks to state laws and personal injury lawyers, the landscape of the typical playground has changed a lot over the years, making it a safer and more “educationally interactive” environment. On the other hand, maybe those rough-and-tumble recreation areas of yesteryear served as an early life lesson that the world was a harsh and unforgiving place.

dublin boys club

In Ireland, there’s a “Dublin Boys Club” that encourages men to share their real feelings, to explore healthy masculinity and offers a safe place to be vulnerable.

The Dublin Boys Club is a place where something very radical happens: men, strangers initially, come together with one purpose: to practise real talk and grow into the most authentic versions of themselves.

black bomber dc comics

DC Comics’ original candidate for its first headlining black superhero was the Black Bomber, a white racist who would turn into a black superhero under stress. Comics historian Don Markstein called it “an insult to practically everybody with any point of view at all.”

In each of the two completed Black Bomber scripts, the white bigot risks his own life to save another person whom he can’t see clearly (in one case, a baby in a stroller) and then reacts in racial slur disgust when he discovers that he risked his life to save a black person. He wasn’t aware that he had two identities, but each identity had a girlfriend and the ladies were aware of the change. To add final insult, the Bomber’s costume was little more than a glorified basketball uniform.

mandrill alpha male

In the mandrill species, if a beta male wins a fight, then it gradually transforms into an alpha male – gaining larger testicles, more colorful skin, and the ability to produce offspring with females. If an alpha male loses a fight, then the reverse happens.

Adult male mandrills with alpha status display vivid colouration on their skin, while those with beta status are more dull in colour. Both types of males engage in mating, but only the dominant alpha males have the ability to produce offspring. Male mandrills sometimes fight for breeding rights which results in dominance. Though conflicts are rare, they can be deadly. Gaining dominance, that is becoming the alpha male, results in an "increased testicular volume, reddening of sexual skin on the face and genitalia, and heightened secretion of the sternal cutaneous gland". When a male loses dominance or its alpha status, the reverse happens, although the blue ridges remain brightened. There is also a fall in its reproductive success. This effect is gradual and takes place over a few years. When beta males mate-guard a female, the competition between them allows the alpha males to have a greater chance of producing offspring, since betas outnumber alphas 21 to 1.

draculas armor

Dracula’s Armor designed by Eiko Ishioka for Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)

Faced with a limited budget, Francis Ford Coppola declared early on that “the costumes will be the set.” For its costume designer, he picked Eiko Ishioka, an art director and graphic artist whose poster for Apocalypse Now (1979) he had loved a few years earlier. Something of an unexpected choice, Ishioka had never before seen a vampire movie and had limited costume design experience in feature films.

Mixing Eastern and Western cultural influences, she drew upon everything from insects and lizards to armadillos and red-blood corpuscles for inspiration, creating costumes that evoked haute couture, superhero attire, and traditional Japanese formal wear.
