What pugs looked like before intense selective breeding

The pug, with its distinctive round face, curly tail, and playful disposition, is a breed that has captured the hearts of many dog lovers around the world. However, the pug we know today is far from the regal and robust dog it once was. Over a century of intensive breeding has left this beloved breed with grossly distorted features and a litany of health problems, prompting experts to call for urgent action to restore the pug to its original form.

Originally hailing from China, pugs made their way to Europe in the 16th century, quickly becoming the favored pets of European royalty. They were cherished by historical figures like William of Orange, who credited his pug with saving his life, and Empress Josephine, who used her pug, Fortune, to carry secret messages during the French Revolution. Even Queen Victoria, an ardent pug enthusiast, owned as many as 38 pugs during her reign.

Parts of the animal are incredibly well-preserved, including its head, nose, whiskers, eyelashes and mouth, revealing that it still had its milk teeth when it died. Researchers suggest the animal was just two months old when it passed, though they do not know the cause of death.

power lines

This magnificent rooster defended his flock of clucking hens from god knows what, and he’s got the bloodstains and scars to prove it.⁣

Whatever it was that knocked, this rooster answered and survived to see another sunrise. Roosters are the head of the flock, charged with setting the pecking order straight and keeping that order within the group.⁣

Yeah, they come to snuff the rooster…⁣

Their other job is to be first in line to kick some ass, no matter what goes bump in the night, the rooster takes the hit for the group. Common chicken thieves range between free roaming cats to fucking bears, but the rooster cares not – his prime directive is to put his life on the line in defense of others and he serves his duty to the letter.⁣

You know he ain’t gonna die⁣.

gorilla selfie

Park ranger takes a selfie with the orphaned gorillas Nkakazi and Ndeze

The image was taken at a gorilla orphanage in Virunga National Park, DR Congo, where the animals were raised after poachers killed their parents.

The gorillas were just two and four months old at the time.

Because they’ve grown up with the rangers who rescued them, Mr Mburanumwe added, “they are imitating the humans” – and standing on two legs is their way of “learning to be human beings”.

ham the chimp

Before NASA sent a man to space, they decided to send a chimp first. And on January 31, 1961, a chimp named Ham received the dubious "honor" of making this historic trip.

Captured in French Cameroon in 1957, Ham was one of 39 chimps selected for NASA training. He had beaten out all of his competitors with his ability to pull levers quickly, but his preparation for the trip was anything but easy.

The Greenland Shark has the longest lifespan of any vertebrate (up to 500 years), and doesn’t even reach sexual maturity until they are 150 years old

One theory to explain this long lifespan is that the Greenland shark has a very slow metabolism, an adaptation to the deep, cold waters it inhabits. A NOAA remotely operated vehicle doing a dive off New England encountered a Greenland shark at a depth of 783 meters, but these sharks are known to dive as deep as 2,200 meters. They’re also the only shark that can withstand the cold waters of the Arctic Ocean year-round.

rex the german shepard

This German Shepherd was shot multiple times and badly beaten while protecting his 16-year-old human from burglars
