Depressing Confession of the Day

I never had a romantic life at 41 and it’s making me bitter.

I struggled with that a lot in my twenties. It’s the period during which remaining alone while other folks mingled around was the hardest. I didn’t stay idle, I worked on myself, met new people, did sports, checked internet for advice and asked my friends for ways to improve, went to therapy. I remained the discreet dude who had very good looking friends.

“Some United States soldiers in the Pacific theater in World War II used the word lollapalooza as a shibboleth to challenge unidentified persons, on the premise that Japanese people would often pronounce both letters L and R as rolled Rs. In Oliver Gramling’s Free Men are Fighting: The Story of World War II (1942) the author notes that, in the war, Japanese spies would often approach checkpoints posing as American or Filipino military personnel. A shibboleth such as “lollapalooza” would be used by the sentry, who, if the first two syllables come back as rorra, would “open fire without waiting to hear the remainder”.

The Story Of The Chinese Farmer

(photo: @nat4ernenko)

Once upon a time there was a Chinese farmer whose horse ran away. That evening, all of his neighbors came around to commiserate. They said, “We are so sorry to hear your horse has run away. This is most unfortunate.” The farmer said, “Maybe.” The next day the horse came back bringing seven wild horses with it, and in the evening everybody came back and said, “Oh, isn’t that lucky. What a great turn of events. You now have eight horses!” The farmer again said, “Maybe.”

Why Did The Aztecs Practice Human Sacrifice?

Sacrifice was a common theme in the Aztec culture. In the Aztec “Legend of the Five Suns”, all the gods sacrificed themselves so that mankind could live.

Some years after the Spanish conquest of Mexico, a body of the Franciscans confronted the remaining Aztec priesthood and demanded, under threat of death, that they desist from this traditional practice. The Aztec priests defended themselves as follows:

Life is because of the gods; with their sacrifice, they gave us life. … They produce our sustenance … which nourishes life.

Doreen Lioy

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Doreen Lioy was a successful editor at a teen magazine. But she gave it all up to become the wife of a Satanic serial killer.

Initially captivated by Ramirez’s perceived vulnerability in television reports of his crimes, Lioy’s visits to him in jail gradually increased to four times a week, as described by a Los Angeles Times reporter who witnessed one such encounter at San Quentin.
