What Was It Like To Fight Americans During World War 2?

October 20, 2023

If you were a German fighting Americans at the start of Operation Torch in Tunisia, you’d have a mixed view of American soldiers.

They were certainly brave, but they lacked experience of the British and ran into ambushes that the Brits had learned to avoid in 1941.

Their equipment was generally good, and they were well supplied.

So well supplied in fact, that you and your unit was evacuated to Sicily after your own supplies dwindled to nothing and the Americans were able to flank you.

Confessions Of An Ex-Mercenary

mercenary interview

How does one become a mercenary ?

Typically you start somewhere. I was a US Army Paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne. Friends of friends found me, and got my first contract to go to Africa.

How’s the pay?

Pay can fluctuate. First of all, there’s a lot of deadbeats in this space. For example, Liberia asked me to create a littoral sea fighting force, but I couldn’t figure out how they would actually pay (regardless of promises) so I walked away. Never work for the UN. Total deadbeats.

germany invades soviet union

June 22, 1941, Germany invades the Soviet Union

Why did they invade the Soviet Union?

Operation Barbarossa was an operation created out of necessity as much as anything else. The previous successful campaigns against Poland and France were successful, but were costly to the German economy. Germany lacked key resources, particularly oil. Germany’s attempts to produce synthetic oil in any great quantity had been unsuccessful. Russia offered Germany a huge supply of oil, plentiful supplies of labor for German industry and to a more ideological degree, lebensraum, the notion of living space for the German people.

Is Russia Really Doing A Piss-Poor Job In Ukraine Or Are We Just Being Fed Propaganda?

April 18, 2022

There’s an element of the fact that the west is generally on Ukraine’s side, and that we’re therefore seeing a Ukraine-centric perspective

But at the same time, the maps don’t lie: Russia was expected to roll Ukraine over in a matter of days or weeks, yet is now 7 weeks into the war and have clearly not steamrolled Ukraine or even achieved their likely/apparent goals

How Does Russian Continue To Be A Threatening Super Power When It Has A Smaller Economy Than Italy And Canada?

March 10, 2022

Russia spends 3x times more of it’s Budget on the military than countries with a comparable economy, so it has far more military hardware and personnel. They also have mandatory military service.

The export a great deal of hardware from guns, vehicles, tanks, and airplanes to other nations which helps justify their R&D budget.

They also have huge amounts of surplus hardware left over from the Soviet Union. A lot of hardware the Russians are using is very old and much of the new state-of-art equipment they flaunt is in very short supply.

What Is The Difference Between a Tactical and Strategic Nuclear Weapon?

March 3, 2022

Tactical nukes are small, a few kilotons yield. They’re delivered by normal weapons systems, such as artillery or strike aircraft over relatively short ranges.

Their job is to break up formations of enemy troops on the battlefield. This can be offensive or defensive. It may seem odd to think of a nuke as a defensive weapon, but the idea is that when you see enemy forces massing to attack you, you drop a tactical nuke on them to break up the attack.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had also turned down an offer from the United States of evacuation from the capital city Kyiv.

“The fight is here; I need ammunition, not a ride,” Zelensky told the US.

“I am here. We are not putting down arms. We will be defending our country, because our weapon is truth, and our truth is that this is our land, our country, our children, and we will defend all of this,”

The people of Kiyv, Ukraine evacuating the capital after Russia begins their invasion

Russia launched a wide-ranging attack on Ukraine on Thursday, hitting cities and bases with airstrikes or shelling, as civilians piled into trains and cars to flee. Ukraine’s government said Russian tanks and troops rolled across the border in a “full-scale war” that could rewrite the geopolitical order and whose fallout already reverberated around the world.

In unleashing Moscow’s most aggressive action since the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, President Vladimir Putin deflected global condemnation and cascading new sanctions — and chillingly referred to his country’s nuclear arsenal. He threatened any foreign country attempting to interfere with “consequences you have never seen.”
