Did Japan Have a War Plan Against The US After Pearl Harbor?

February 27, 2023

Japan’s hopes was that after destroying the Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, that it would take at minimum 2 years for the US to rebuild the fleet back up to seriously take on the Japanese fleet.

What is Seppuku?

February 16, 2023

Seppuku is a ritualized and institutionalized form of suicide among the Samurai in Feudal Japan, performed by plunging a sword into your stomach and disemboweling yourself.

It was fundamentally an “honorable” way to commit suicide when you would otherwise be killed, not some random act done based on minor embarrassment.

Samurai would do it rather than be captured by a hostile force or after being convicted of very serious crimes. Sometimes it would be a requirement for a peace treaty and basically replaced killing the leader of the losing faction.

How Were Pilots Chosen To Become Kamizakes?

November 1, 2022

how were kamikaze pilots chosen

Because the tokkōtai operation was a guarantee of death, the top military officers, quite hypocritically, decided not to make this operation an official part of the imperial navy or army, where orders were issued in the name of the emperor. They preferred to make it appear that the corps was formed voluntarily and that men volunteered to be pilots.

“Sleeping with the fishes” is an age-old idiom associated with the mob as a punishment for serious offenders of their code of honor. The phrase actually dates back to ancient Greece, being first referenced in The Iliad. It’s not the only retribution the mob carries out, though. In Japan, the mob is called the yakuza. When the yakuza wants to penalize an offending member – but not fatally – one permanent and still painful punishment is yubitsume.

August 22, 2022

japan assassination

The last time a major political figure was assassinated in Japan was back in 1960 when a 17-year-old by the name of Otoya Yamaguchi used a wakizashi (traditional short sword) to kill Inejirō Asanuma who was leader of the Socialist Party at the time.

The assassination occurred while Asanuma was participating in a nationally televised debate in Tokyo. Yamaguchi was detained before he could turn the sword on himself.

While awaiting his trial, Yamaguchi used toothpaste and water to write on his prison wall: “Long live the Emperor” and “Would that I had seven lives to give for my country.”

How Hard Is It To Own A Gun In Japan?

June 9, 2022

how to buy a gun in japan

Almost no one in Japan owns a gun. Most kinds are illegal, with onerous restrictions on buying and maintaining the few that are allowed. Even the country’s infamous, mafia-like Yakuza tend to forgo guns; the few exceptions tend to become big national news stories.

Handguns are forbidden absolutely. Small-caliber rifles have been illegal to buy, sell, or transfer since 1971. Anyone who owned a rifle before then is allowed to keep it, but their heirs are required to turn it over to the police once the owner dies.

The only guns that Japanese citizens can legally buy and use are shotguns and air rifles, and it’s not easy to do.

An increasing number of elderly Japanese people are committing small crimes so they can live in prison for free. People aged 65+ now make up more than a quarter of the prison population in Japan

Crime figures show that about 35 per cent of shoplifting offenses are committed by people over 60. Within that age bracket, 40 per cent of repeat offenders have committed the same crime more than six times.

There is good reason, concludes a report, to suspect that the shoplifting crime wave in particular represents an attempt by those convicted to end up in prison — an institution that offers free food, accommodation and healthcare.

Why Did Japan Think It Was Worthwhile To Attack The US at Pearl Harbor?

January 11, 2022

The Japanese leadership had come to the conclusion that they needed national self-sufficiency for their growing military aspirations.

They didn’t have the oil and other natural resources in their own territories to make this a reality.

They had two choices: Take it from Russia in the form of Siberian resources, or take it from Western colonies in SE Asia. The first required a lot more Army units than they had. So, they went with taking them from SE Asian colonies.

The Japanese understood that they could not win a prolonged war with America. Their solution was to destroy America’s offensive ability in the Pacific theater and remove Americas will to fight so that they would sue for peace.
