Why Shouldn’t You Get A PhD In History?

November 8, 2023

I am a PhD student in medieval history in the U.S. My remarks concern History PhD programs in the U.S. If you think this is hypocritical, so be it.

The humanities PhD is still a vocational degree to prepare students for a career teaching in academia, and there are no jobs. Do not get a PhD in history.

Look, I get it. You don’t “love history;” you love history with everything in your soul and you read history books outside your subfield for fun and you spend 90% of your free time trying to get other people to love history as much as you do, or even a quarter as much, or even just think about it for a few minutes and your day is made. I get it.

The body of Hermann Göring, Oct. 16, 1946

Hermann Göring was a prominent figure in the Nazi Party, second only to Adolf Hitler in the hierarchy of the Third Reich. His influence extended across various sectors of the Nazi regime, where he held numerous titles and wielded significant power. As one of the earliest members of the Nazi Party, Göring was instrumental in the establishment and consolidation of the totalitarian state. He founded the Gestapo, the official secret police of Nazi Germany, and was appointed as Commander-in-Chief of the Luftwaffe, the German Air Force, playing a pivotal role in the military campaigns of World War II.

The Daily Man-Up

November 8, 2023

With LESS than 2 month to welcome 2024, there are two scenarios on how you can get ready for the new year:

Scenario 1: you wait until January 1st to start thinking about what you want to achieve in the next 365 days. You try to figure out your training and nutrition plans, the habits and routines you need to implement to be successful. You try to figure all out in just one day. You tell yourself “I’m starting on January 1st!”. In the meantime you have the perfect excuse to let yourself go.

Scenario 2: TODAY you start thinking and planning for 2024. You start asking yourself what will drive you in 2024, and why? You start working on a plan that will help you achieve your goal. You start implementing the right habits, you start eliminating the wrong ones. You don’t wait. You start.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all about the holidays and enjoying the extra treats and beers with friends and family. All I’m saying is: ?Why wait until January 1st to start thinking about how you are going to keep building your own best version? Get ready today. Prepare yourself today . Don’t wait a month until you start figuring these things out.

Get Clear on what you are doing in 2024. Start working on your routine, your self-discipline, your goals..so when January 1st hits…you are ready to start, you don’t get hit with any surprises, you are a well-oiled machine.

Don’t wait until January 1st to wake up. Start TODAY

Confessions of a Man Who Suffered From Locked-In Syndrome

November 7, 2023

How did you get locked-in?

I was diagnosed with a terminal progressive disease May 24, 2017 called toxic acute progressive leukoenpholopathy. I declined rapidly over the next few months and by the fifth month I began suffering from locked-in syndrome. Two months after that I was sent on home hospice to die. I timed out of hospice and I broke out of locked in syndrome around July 4, 2018. I was communicating nonverbally and living in rehabilitation hospitals, relearning to speak, move, eat, and everything. I finally moved out of long-term care back to my new home December 1, 2020.

Japan’s Sole Titanic Survivor Was Shunned as a Coward For Not Pershing With the Shit

November 7, 2023

Masabumi Hosono

In the early hours of April 15, 1912, the RMS Titanic, a marvel of modern engineering, met with catastrophe in the icy waters of the North Atlantic. Among its passengers was Masabumi Hosono, a Japanese civil servant, whose survival would become a source of national controversy and personal disgrace.

Born in 1870, Hosono was an employee of the Japanese Ministry of Transport. In 1910, he was sent to Russia to study the country’s railway system, and it was on his return journey to Japan that he boarded the Titanic at Southampton as a second-class passenger.

Confession of the Day

November 7, 2023

Haven’t yet had sex with my wife of 2.5 years and I feel like I’m in a prison and am rotting from the inside

We saved sex for marriage, didn’t really grow up in purity culture, or at least feel any shame or pressure. The night of our wedding was met with tears and fear. I admittedly didn’t react well. Trying to understand if I did something, or if there was something she wasn’t telling me.

The next 6 months was me highlighting the fact that we NEEDED to figure this out, not only for me, but because we can’t make it normal. She didn’t understand why I wanted this so bad and was confident we’d figure this out.

2 years from that point, we’re still here. 3 different counselors/therapists, 1 year of pelvic therapy, lots of honest talks with friends and still no penetration. At all. Vibrator is fine, but we’ve made no progress. She is unable to get her legs to relax and if I try to force it, it feels like rape. I can’t stay aroused because she’s resisting me, despite her telling me every day that this is something she wants.

I just don’t understand what I’m supposed to do. She doesn’t want me to watch porn, but I can’t get by with handjobs that I only get if I ask for them. I can’t leave because I vowed to work through our problems, I can’t stay because I want to actually have a chance at a family. I want someone who is passionate about me and actually does something about it. Every marriage in my family has ended, every single one has ended in divorce and I am better than that. But I just don’t see how I’m supposed to live in limbo like this.

I often fantasize about me or her dying because it’s the only way I see out of this.
