A guy from Sweden rode his bicycle to Nepal, climbed Everest alone without Sherpas or bottled oxygen, then cycled back to Sweden again.

For his 1996 ascent, Göran Kropp left Stockholm on October 16, 1995, on a specially-designed bicycle with 108 kg (240 lb) of gear and food. He traveled 8,000 miles on the bicycle and arrived at Everest Base Camp in April 1996. Following a meeting of all of the Everest expeditions on the mountain at the time, it was agreed that Kropp would attempt to summit first.

Where the term ‘uppercase and ‘lowercase’ came from: from the early days of the printing press

The individual type blocks used in hand typesetting are stored in shallow wooden or metal drawers known as "type cases". Each is subdivided into a number of compartments ("boxes") for the storage of different individual letters.

The terms upper and lower case originate from this division. By convention, when the two cases were taken out of the storage rack, and placed on a rack on the compositor’s desk, the case containing the capitals and small capitals stood at a steeper angle at the back of the desk, with the case for the small letters, punctuation and spaces being more easily reached at a shallower angle below it to the front of the desk, hence upper and lower case.

The Daily Man-Up

Grit, as a personality trait, isn’t just a synonym of persistence, toughness, and ambition, but a culmination of them. And yet, grit is more. It’s everything mentioned, but with the addition of passion.

Grit is a man passionate towards along term goal, and his resilience on the road to achieving it. Just as the great warrior – Alexander the Great, for example – had grit, so does the entrepreneur. The man trying to lose 30 pounds needs grit to lose that weight, just like the boxer needs it to win the title, and to keep it.

Rocky Marciano had true grit, as did Joe Louis. Churchill and Napoleon had it in spades. Grit separates the strong from the weak, the courageous from the fearful.

Although grit is a focused man on a mission, it isn’t the hot shot rising to stardom, seeking fame. A man with true grit is stoic and silent in the face of his trials. He’s humble.

Orgone Accumulator

Kurt Angle vs Daniel Pruder

On the Nov. 4, 2004 episode of SmackDown, Kurt Angle had challenged contestants from WWE reality show Tough Enough to best him in the ring. The probable narrative was big, bad Olympian destroys a handful of green upstarts. Angle steamrolled through his first foe, Chris Nawrocki, breaking his ribs in the process.

Daniel Puder refused to be the next victim, to accept that storyline. He proceeded to write his own. After tussling with Angle for a few moments, Puder gripped Angle’s right arm, forced it into an awkward angle and by his own admission, tried to break it.

Puder said, “I caught him in a key lock, pulled him into a kimura and tried to snap his arm off.”

12 Most WTF TV Series Finales

September 22, 2020

'Dinosaurs' width=

Dinosaurs

In the series finale, all hope of an episode of reminiscing about the humor that made the series a hit was stripped away – as viewers got to watch Earl Sinclair bring about the end of the Dinosaurs by poisoning the world’s plant life and subsequently blocking out the sun. The result of which was global temperatures dropping well below freezing and the imminent extinction of every living thing on the planet.

While every adult watching knew what was happening, their children may have been somewhat oblivious. Luckily, the writers made time in the finale’s last moments to bring everyone in the know as Earl has to explain to Baby Sinclair how there’s no place for them to go and that he’s sorry for killing them all.

This episode was so WTF that TV Guide had to include a special warning that the subject matter in this episode might “frighten or disturb younger viewers.” You know, because children aren’t really used to watching their favorite characters – who were marketed to kids in the form of music videos and stuffed animals – dying a slow death.

Orgone Accumulator

The Orgone Accumulator was a device sold in the 1950s to allow a person sitting inside to attract orgone, a massless ‘healing energy’. The FDA noted that one purchaser, a college professor, knew it was “phony” but found it “helpful because his wife sat quietly in it for four hours every day."
