Why Don’t They Immediately Remove Rubble When A Building Collapses?

surfside building collapse

Excavators, bulldozers and other heavy machinery essentially do their job by pushing large amounts of material around.

Huge bulldozers shoving tons of rubble and crushing the gaps as they do so is not an effective way to save the people trapped in the pockets beneath.

You can’t just pile in and shift hundreds of tons of collapsed rubble without it moving underneath you, potentially killing anyone who’s surviving in a small pocket underneath.

man refuses the nazi salute

Refusing to do the Nazi salute, 1936.

The man was later identified to be August Landmesser who joined the Nazi party in 1931, believing that doing so would help him land a job during a poor economy. However, in 1934, as fate would have it, Landmesser fell in love with a Jewish women named Irma Eckler.

A year later they became engaged but their marriage application was denied by newly enacted Nuremberg laws which prohibited marriages between Jews and non-Jews. This however, did not deter them from having children, and Eckler gave birth to their first daughter, Ingrid, in 1935.

Michelangelo's Moses

This is the right forearm of Michelangelo’s Moses (c. 1513–1515) statue.

The arrow points to a small muscle called the extensor digiti minimi, which only contracts when the pinky is lifted, otherwise it is invisible.

Most of Michelangelo’s sculptures are painstakingly detailed and you can clearly see his obsession with the human body, which he saw as a physical representation of the soul. Michelangelo always preferred sculpting over painting.

hiroo onoda

A Japanese soldier in WWII, Hiroo Onoda, held out for 29 years in the jungle of the Philippines, and refused to quit fighting until he was convinced the war was over… in 1974

On December 26th, 1944, Onoda was sent to Lubang Island in the Philippines.  His orders from his commanding officers, Major Yoshimi Taniguchi, were simple:

You are absolutely forbidden to die by your own hand. It may take three years, it may take five, but whatever happens, we’ll come back for you. Until then, so long as you have one soldier, you are to continue to lead him. You may have to live on coconuts. If that’s the case, live on coconuts! Under no circumstances are you [to] give up your life voluntarily.
