What is the Difference Between Modernism and Postmodernism

March 9, 2023

Modernism broadly refers a set of beliefs that became dominant in the late 19th century and continued through most of the 20th century. These beliefs were generally that logic, science, and reason could help us learn from the mistakes of the past, and using what we learned, come to a deeper understanding of ourselves and of the meaning of human life. There is usually some sort of vibrant optimism in modernism, at least as far as the idea that if we just think hard enough and look deeply enough, we can make things better (at least understand things better). debeers 2 months salary

The “tradition” of spending several months salary on an engagement ring was a marketing campaign created by De Beers in the 1930’s. Before WWII, only 10% of engagement rings contained diamonds. By the end of the 20th Century, 80% did.

The idea was embedded in popular culture in the West by an advertising drive from the De Beers diamond cartel that started in the lean years of the 1930s. The Depression was a disaster for De Beers, which controlled 60% of rough diamond output. De Beers embarked on what it now describes as a “substantial” campaign, linking diamonds with engagement.

Prior to the 1930s, presenting a woman with a diamond engagement ring was not the norm. Even on the eve of World War Two, a mere 10% of engagement rings contained diamonds. By the end of the 20th Century, 80% did.

Your Time Is The Furthest Thing From Free

March 9, 2023

(photo: @veri_ivanova)

For the majority of my life I made one really big mistake: I under-valued the precious nature of the time I’ve been given to live here on earth, and over-valued the short term gratification that comes from digital pleasure.

What Is The Story Behind The Burglar Who Sued The Homeowner?

March 8, 2023

Katko v. Briney, was a court case decided by the Iowa Supreme Court, in which two homeowners (Edward and Bertha Briney) were held liable for battery for injuries caused to a trespasser (Marvin Katko) who set off a spring gun set as a mantrap in an abandoned house on the homeowners’ property. The case thereafter received wide attention in legal circles, becoming a staple of tort law casebooks and law school courses.

Bertha Briney inherited an old farmhouse in Mahaska County, Iowa, which the Brineys had left vacant for the last ten years prior to the incident. They had the farmhouse boarded up and placed “No Trespassing” signs around the property. The farmhouse was in poor condition and was subject to frequent burglaries and break-ins.

Either You Challenge Yourself Or Life Will Do It For You

life is hard

(photo: @morsha)

Life is hard. I don’t think anyone’s going to argue against that. There will always be challenges.

You have two options:

  1. You choose you challenges. You push yourself. You go after what you want. You make it happen. It will be hard work, but you get to chose where you go and become the active driver of your life.

  2. You do nothing and wait until life throws something at you. Then you’re on defense. You’re unprepared and just doing your best to stay afloat. You’re unprepared and unpracticed because you’ve spent all of your time dicking around.

The choice is yours.

10 People Who Like Their Steaks Well-Done Explain WHY

March 7, 2023

well done steaks

1. First of all, by well done, I mean brown all the way through, which is not the same as completely burned so that the steak resembles a hockey puck in appearance and flavor.

I have had some phenomenal steaks cooked well done at moderate-to-upscale steakhouses, and the outside was barely charred at all.

After trying steaks cooked to a variety of temperatures, I feel that well done is the best according to my tastes. I don’t feel that the flavor is substantially lost by cooking the steak for longer.
