Face it, we anime fans are a bloodthirsty bunch. And no film brings the gory goods like 1986’s Fist of the North Star. This movie is a feast for the eyes and ear drums, serving up enough over-the-top hyperviolence to satiate even the most depraved animation geeks.
Fist of the North Star’s post-apocalyptic world is basically Mad Max on steroids. Roaming bands of psychopaths and brutal warlords wreak havoc without end.
Enter Kenshiro, our protagonist with seven scars on his chest and a knack for poking people in just the right spots. And by “right spots,” I mean pressure points that cause… well, explosive results. Who knew acupuncture could be so deadly?
Kenshiro’s attacks make heads explode in a fountain of blood and pink mist. Arms and legs get chopped off. Bodies writhe in agony. It’s like a grotesque ballet of mutilation, depicted with gloriously fluid 80s animation.
And Fist of the North Star doesn’t just have the gore, it has the attitude. Kenshiro coolly growls his catchphrase “You are already dead) as his foes’ bodies contort and rip apart in ultra slow motion. It’s comedic in its sheer over-the-topness. You can’t help but laugh and pump your fist as another mohawked punk meets his screaming demise.
Some may dismiss Fist of the North Star’s violence as senseless and gratuitous. But real fans know that the insanely bloody action is an essential part of its retro charm. Sometimes you just want to switch off your brain and watch an onslaught of gruesome yet creative cartoon carnage. And on that front, no anime before or since has surpassed this classic. If you’re in need of some cathartic animated brutality, accept no substitutes.
