An example can be seen in Qatar with the building of the infrastructure for the 2022 Fifa World cup.
They attracted workers from vulnerable countries in South Asia and the middle east such as Nepal, Pakistan and Bangladesh using a “sponsorship” system.
Qatar basically pays for them to come over then they pay back the debt to Qatar while working.
However, when the workers arrives ALL their wages are witheld for the “debt” so they cannot to afford to leave.
Employers confiscate the workers passports so they can’t travel back to their countries.
They are not issued local identification cards either so they can’t seek alternate work or medical care.
Workers are placed in terrible housing conditions and forced to work extreme hours with very little food or water in order to earn back their wages and freedoms.
As of February 2021 it’s estimated some 6,500 migrant workers have died in Qatar.
These are people who came looking for opportunities to give their families back home a better life.
They died out there in the desert and never saw their families again.
