What to Say to a Cop When He Asks “Do You Know How Fast You Were Going?”

April 5, 2024

My dad, 3 uncles, 5 great uncles, well over 20 cousins are all law enforcement.

I pretty much drive 10–30 mph over the speed limit everywhere that’s outside of the city (live in a city of 100k people, and travel all over the state for work, all the time).

I get pulled over at least 6 times a year. So far this year I’ve been pulled over 8 times and got 1 ticket. On average, I get a ticket once every 2 years. Yes, I normally get a ticket less than 10% of the time I’m pulled over.

When I am speeding and see a LEO put their lights on, I IMMEDIATELY do the following:

What Is A Sovereign Citizen?

December 11, 2023

Sovereign citizen

A “sovereign citizen” is a term used to describe individuals or groups who adhere to a set of fringe beliefs and legal theories that reject the authority of the government and its laws. Sovereign citizens typically claim that they are not subject to the laws, regulations, or taxation of the government, and they often engage in various tactics to evade law enforcement and legal authorities. How Should I Respond When a Cop Asks Me If They Can Search My Vehicle?

June 26, 2023

how to respond when cop wants to search car

I was a police officer for twenty-five years and made hundreds of car stops and completed quite a few searches, so listen to this retired patrol commander:

In the simplest of terms, if a police officer asks your permission to do something, they are not allowed to do this thing without your permission or consent.

Just say the words, I do not consent to a search without a warrant.

What Is The Story Behind The Burglar Who Sued The Homeowner?

March 8, 2023

Katko v. Briney, was a court case decided by the Iowa Supreme Court, in which two homeowners (Edward and Bertha Briney) were held liable for battery for injuries caused to a trespasser (Marvin Katko) who set off a spring gun set as a mantrap in an abandoned house on the homeowners’ property. The case thereafter received wide attention in legal circles, becoming a staple of tort law casebooks and law school courses.

Bertha Briney inherited an old farmhouse in Mahaska County, Iowa, which the Brineys had left vacant for the last ten years prior to the incident. They had the farmhouse boarded up and placed “No Trespassing” signs around the property. The farmhouse was in poor condition and was subject to frequent burglaries and break-ins.

Why Are Rich People More Successful In Court Than Poor People?

September 8, 2021

The problem is that my clients don’t enjoy the advantages of a well groomed lifestyle. Half of them don’t even know what I mean when I say “dress nice for trial tomorrow when the jury first sees you.”

They think that means show up in jeans with their shirt tucked in, and if they know what kinds of clothes I’m talking about, odds are they can’t afford those ones.

Why Was Billy Cosby Released From Prison?

July 6, 2021

why was bill cosby released from prison

The main reason this case was overturned was because in 2005 the Montgomery County District Attorney effectively promised never to prosecute Cosby for raping Andrea Costand (through a public press release saying he was not going to prosecute Cosby), believing that there was no way he could get a conviction, and seeking to give her some justice by helping her when she sued him for the assault in civil court.
